Serum IgA antibodies to Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) early lytic antigens are present in primary EBV infection.

چکیده
Primary Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection is characterized by the presence of IgM antibodies to viral capsid antigen and the absence of antibodies to EB nuclear antigen. Here, using a flow cytometry-based assay, we investigated whether IgA antibodies are a marker for primary infection. Serum IgA antibodies in 15 individuals with primary EBV infection reacted with 15%-55.6% of HH514-16 Burkitt lymphoma cells expressing early lytic antigens (EAs), whereas IgA antibodies in serum samples from 15 healthy EBV-seropositive individuals reacted with 0.02%-2% of cells with EAs (P<.0001). IgA antibodies in primary infection were directed against the Bam Z Epstein-Barr replication activator (ZEBRA) (BZLF1) and diffuse EA (BMRF1) EAs. Thus, IgA antibodies to EBV EAs are produced during primary EBV infection and are likely to be stimulated as a result of lytic EBV replication in mucosal sites. Detection of IgA antibodies to EA may be developed into a diagnostic tool for primary EBV infection.

Seropidemiology of Epstein – Barr virus infection among asymptomatic
Introduction: Epstein – Barr virus (EBV) is a herpesvirus which establishes a persistent life-long infection in over 95% of adults world wide. Infection is usually asymptomatic but the virus is associated with a variety of disease, including nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC), Burkitt’s lymphoma (BL), Multiple sclerosis MS, EBV-associated B-cell lymphoproliferative disease (BLPD), Hodgkin and non...
متن کاملAnalysis of Epstein Barr Virus Genome in Serum and Ocular Samples of Patients with Inflammatory Eye Disease Using PCR Method
Background and Aims: Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection is very common in the population. Virus belongs to the family Herpesviridae, whose representatives are characterized by the ability to cause the human body latent persistent infections. The goal of this study was to assess EBV infection frequency using PCR method in samples from inflammatory eye disease, in comparison with EBV presence in ...
متن کاملEpithelial cell polarization is a determinant in the infectious outcome of immunoglobulin A-mediated entry by Epstein-Barr virus.
Diseases of the nasopharyngeal epithelium due to Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection typically occur in chronic virus carriers with preexisting virus-specific antibodies. In vitro studies have shown that EBV-specific immunoglobulin A (IgA) promotes infection of human epithelial cells, otherwise refractory to EBV, via the polymeric immunoglobulin receptor (pIgR). To determine if EBV similarly exp...
متن کاملClinical reliability of IgG, IgA, and IgM antibodies in detecting Epstein-Barr virus at different stages of infection with a commercial nonrecombinant polyantigenic ELISA.
We studied the diagnostic reliability of a modification of the Enzygnost EBV test (Behringwerke, Germany) for the detection of IgG, IgA, and IgM antibodies (Abs) in the diagnosis of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) disease. One hundred and twenty-three serum samples were studied: 14 asymptomatic subjects without EBV infection, 48 patients with primary infection, 46 subjects with past EBV infection (11 ...
